The African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), together with TrustAfrica, Reform Initiatives, the INCLUDE Knowledge Platform, the Teaching and Inspiration through the Arts Institute (TIA), WIDU.africa, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), St. James Church Fordham and other partners, invites you to a series of high-level engagements in Washington, D.C. and New York from 18 to 21 September 2026.
Whether you work in policy, advocacy, academia, faith leadership, development finance or community organising, these engagements offer a platform to connect, contribute and help shape the next chapter of structured Africa–Diaspora cooperation.
Programme of Engagements
Journey to 20 Seats: Diaspora Participation and Reparative Justice
This high-level engagement will explore what meaningful and structured diaspora participation in African Union processes should look like in practice.
The conversation will focus on the 20 diaspora seats within ECOSOCC, representation, accountability, inclusion and coordination between diaspora organisations and African Union institutions, while connecting diaspora participation to the AU's wider reparative justice agenda and the emerging Reparations Caravan.
Reparative Justice, Institutional Responsibility and Diaspora Participation
This engagement will bring together African Union representatives, faith institutions, universities, reparations movements, diaspora organisations, community actors and scholars.
The discussion will examine what meaningful repair requires in practice — memory, recognition, restitution, healing, institutional accountability and reform — connecting with the United Nations' Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034) and the wider international momentum around reparatory justice.
Fire Chat: Diaspora Capital and Development Finance
Harnessing diaspora resources for Africa's transformation and inclusive development
The Fire Chat will explore how Africa can move beyond viewing the diaspora as a source of remittances and instead engage diaspora communities as strategic partners in investment, entrepreneurship, technology, knowledge and development finance.
Discussions will focus on investor trust, safeguards, financing mechanisms, national diaspora focal points and the proposed African–Diaspora Investment Corridor, including concrete actions to move the Corridor towards implementation.
