NOTICE — Important Update on the 2026 ECOSOCC Citizens’ Forum (ECF26)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Warm greetings from the ECOSOCC Secretariat. We write to share an important update regarding the 2026 ECOSOCC Citizens’ Forum (ECF26), scheduled for 22–23 June 2026 in El Alamein, Egypt.

Preparations for the aforesaid forum had reached an advanced stage of readiness across all workstreams with 300+ confirmed international delegates, a finalised programme with confirmed panelists and speakers, and logistical arrangements fully in place; the Forum is in every sense fully prepared to convene.

However, it has come to our attention that, during the course of the past week, the host country expressed its intention to postpone the planned AU statutory meetings to a later date (including the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting) in view of the prevailing public health concerns on the continent. The request for postponement is currently under deliberation by the relevant AU policy organs, and we anticipate greater clarity before the close of this business week.

As ECF26 forms an integral part of the AU calendar and is operationally linked to these statutory convenings, a formal decision to postpone would automatically apply to the Forum as well. We are monitoring developments closely and will notify all partners promptly and directly by email as soon as a determination is made. We also encourage you to follow our official website https://ecosocc.au.int/en/ecf for formal communiqués.

We are fully conscious of the disruption this postponement may cause, particularly for those who have already made travel, accommodation, or visa arrangements. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and wish to assure you that this situation lies entirely beyond ECOSOCC’s direct control.

ECOSOCC’s commitment to the Forum remains firm. The theme, programme, confirmed partnerships, and delegate registrations are fully intact, and the Forum will proceed with the same rigour and purpose that has characterised its preparation once the AU’s final position is confirmed.

We are grateful for your patience, understanding, and continued cooperation, and we look forward to welcoming you to our landmark convening of African civil society in due course.

About the Forum

The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) will convene the 2026 ECOSOCC Citizens Forum on 22–23 June 2026 in El Alamein, Arab Republic of Egypt. The theme is "Reimagining Global Governance: Africa and a World in Transition."

ECOSOCC is the advisory organ of the African Union and the main channel of engagement between African citizens, civil society and AU institutions. Previous editions of the Citizens' Forum were held in Lusaka (2022), Nairobi (2023), Accra (2024) and Malabo (2025). Each brings civil society together with AU organs, Member States and development partners to produce recommendations that feed into AU processes and Agenda 2063.

The 2026 Forum sits within a week of ECOSOCC engagements in Egypt (20–27 June), held alongside the Africa Business Summit and the AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting. Six thematic streams structure the programme: UN Security Council reform, global financial justice, water and sanitation, climate justice, reparative justice, and AI governance.
