BACKGROUND
The African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC) was established in 2004 as an advisory body designed to ensure civil society is actively engaged in the AU’s decision-making processes. Representing 154 organizations from across Africa, ECOSOCC champions peace, security, human rights, socio-economic development, youth and gender equality, inclusivity, and grassroots participation in addressing other key issues impacting Africa’s future development prospects.
This year’s Second Ordinary Session of the Fourth Permanent General Assembly is particularly significant, coinciding with ECOSOCC’s 20th anniversary. This Session provides an opportunity to:
- Elect new leadership that reflects gender parity and youth representation.
- Review and adopt key reports and strategies to guide ECOSOCC’s activities for the next two years.
- Launch National ECOSOCC Chapters to increase civil society’s grassroots participation in AU decision-making.
EVENT OVERVIEW
The Session will feature:
- Elections for the ECOSOCC Standing Committee (2024–2026 term).
- Discussions on progress made, challenges faced, and the way forward in civil society engagement.
- Launch of the Call for Applications for National ECOSOCC Chapters.
