The African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC) participated in the 2024 World Internet Conference (WIC), held in Wuzhen, China from 19-21 November 2024. The globally renowned event brought together leaders, innovators, and stakeholders to explore the role of the internet in shaping the global future.
This year's theme, "Embracing a People-Centered and AI-for-Good Digital Future - Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace," resonated deeply with ECOSOCC's mission to boost collaboration between civil society organizations across continents. The conference focused heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) and explored critical areas such as digital connectivity, internet governance, and the application of technology to address global challenges, emphasizing inclusion, innovation, and sustainability.
William Carew's keynote address
As part of the conference's Internet Public Welfare and Charity Forum, ECOSOCC's Head of Secretariat, Mr. William Carew delivered a keynote speech on the "Innovating Service Models for Internet Charity" panel. His address highlighted the evolving partnership between Africa and China, emphasizing the importance of technology, civil society, and shared values in addressing global challenges.
Shared values as a foundation for collaboration
Mr. Carew underscored the shared philosophies of Africa and China-Ubuntu ("I am because we are") and China's emphasis on harmony. These principles, he said, remind us that humanity is interconnected and that global progress depends on collective action and mutual respect.
The power of internet connectivity
The internet, Mr. Carew noted, has become a critical enabler of development in the 21st century. He applauded China's role in expanding Africa's digital infrastructure, which has empowered communities by improving access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
For example, internet connectivity has facilitated e-learning platforms, connecting students in remote areas to quality education. In healthcare, telemedicine and digital health platforms are revolutionizing access to medical expertise, particularly in underserved regions.
The role of civil society in development
Mr. Carew highlighted the crucial role of civil society in shaping Africa's socio-economic landscape. He commended Chinese NGOs for their contributions to healthcare, poverty reduction, and agricultural development in Africa. Initiatives like the China-Africa Friendship Hospital in Ethiopia exemplify the impact of partnerships that prioritize long-term capacity building over short-term relief.
Strengthening ties
Mr. Carew shared exciting upcoming initiatives that would further strengthen Africa-China relations:
- 1st Africa-China Civil Society Global Dialogue: Scheduled to take place in Lusaka, Zambia, from 5-8 May 2025. The forum will provide a platform for civil society organizations from both regions to deepen collaboration and share innovative strategies.
- Field Mission to Beijing: ECOSOCC will visit China in June 2025 to meet with NGOs and explore new areas of partnership to align with Agenda 2063.
The broader purpose of the World Internet Conference
The World Internet Conference aims to further international dialogue on the digital economy and its potential to improve lives globally. This year's sessions focused on topics like artificial intelligence, data security, and the ethical use of emerging technologies. The Internet Public Welfare and Charity Forum, where Mr. Carew spoke, explored how digital tools can enhance charitable efforts, amplify social impact, and connect communities across borders.
Call to Action
Mr. Carew concluded his address with a powerful message: Africa's development is not just about receiving aid but about forging and strengthening partnerships rooted in mutual respect, sustainability, and transparency. By leveraging the power of the internet and collective goodwill, Africa and China can work together to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
