ECOSOCC statement on the Republic of The Sudan

share

The African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC) is deeply concerned over the recent negative political developments that have impacted the Republic of The Sudan. The armed violent acts between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which erupted in Khartoum on 15 April 2023 have led to the death of at least 56 people and this is worrisome to the citizenry of Sudan and beyond. Established during the third Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in 2004, under the provisions of articles 5 (i) and 22 of the AU Constitutive Act, ECOSOCC serves to promote and defend a culture of good governance, democratic principles and institutions, popular participation, human rights and social justice. In this regard, the developments in Sudan counter principles as enshrined in the AU Constitutive Act.

In solidarity, ECOSOCC joins the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) in strongly condemning the ongoing armed confrontation between the two sides throughout Sudan, which has resulted in loss of lives, injuries amongst civilians including international humanitarian workers, and destruction of property.

ECOSOCC calls for the peaceful resolution of crises and the restoration of the constitutional order in Sudan in accordance to the principles enshrine in the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and other Continental and Regional instruments.

ECOSOCC supports the call made by the Peace and Security Council to the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) to activate the Continental Conflict Prevention Mechanism to put an end to these military confrontations. The organ further urges all parties to work together in good faith, for the establishment of Peace, rule of law, democratic institutions and constitutional order of the Sudanese transition.
