The recently concluded 8th Africa Women Conference (AWC), held in Zambia from November 6th to 8th, 2024, brought together leaders, organizations, and advocates to empower African women through digital inclusion. Under the theme, "Digital Advancement: Harnessing its Potential for the African Woman," the event emphasized bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth for women across the continent.
The conference unfolded with a lineup of keynote addresses and goodwill messages, including an address by Mr. William Carew, Head of Secretariat of the African Union's Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).
Mr. Carew highlighted the crucial role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in promoting digital and inclusive growth for African women. He emphasized the need for CSOs to enhance access to digital tools, support policy advocacy, and provide mentorship to women entrepreneurs. He further stressed that digital empowerment is not only vital for personal growth but also for the economic development of African communities and nations.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in insightful panel discussions and interactive workshops, covering topics such as digital inclusion, financial access, agric-tech solutions, and support for women entrepreneurs. The conference included sessions on empowering women in technology and leadership, featuring speakers such as Dr. Kangwa Mabuluki, the All Africa Theological Education by Extension General Secretary and Prof. Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, who discussed the need for women's involvement in the digital economy.
The last day of the conference focused on economic empowerment and international trade. It included group activities where participants collaborated to address challenges in digital access, safety, and market connectivity. These group sessions fostered creativity and practical solutions, with each team presenting prototypes to support women's digital advancement.
The conference concluded with a dinner and awards ceremony, celebrating achievements and reinforcing commitments to advancing digital inclusion for African women. EOSOCC's Head of Secretariat, Mr. William Carew, was honored with the "Leadership Excellence in African Civil Society" Award by the Africa Women Conference.
ECOSOCC will continue to partner with AWC as it continues to champion the role of African women in shaping the continent's digital future, fostering a stronger and more resilient economy through increased digital participation.
