The African Union Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) expresses its concern on the ongoing post-electoral violence in Mozambique following the October 9th, 2024, polls to elect the President, Members of the Assembly of the Republic and Provincial Assemblies.
ECOSOCC is saddened by the heightened violence after the announcement of the final results by the Mozambican Constitutional Court and regrets the loss of life, destruction of property and forced displacement. This unfortunate violence will exacerbate the already volatile security situation in the country and impede rescues and relief efforts for victims of Cyclone Chido.
ECOSOCC appeals for calm and calls on all stakeholders to exercise the utmost restraint. ECOSOCC calls on them to urge their supporters to immediately cease the violence and engage in a peaceful dialogue to find a political solution to the situation.
ECOSOCC calls on civil society organizations and faith-based organizations in the country to play a constructive role by initiating mediation and dialogue, as well as promoting peace to ease the political tension.
