Speakers

  • Peter Mudungwe, Migration Specialist; Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, African Union Commission;
  • Geoffrey Wafula, Program Coordinator, Migration; Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, African Union Commission;
  • Rita Amukhobu; Ag. Head, Humanitarian Affairs, Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, African Union Commission;
  • Felicitas Mukurarinda. Head of Project Support to the African Union on Migration and Displacement, GIZ AU Office.

Why: 15 years after the adoption of the original MPFA, and five years into the revised framework and its Plan of Action, implementation at the level of African Union member states remains significantly limited. This is in spite of a concerted program of sensitization of member state policy-makers to improve awareness of the revised MPFA and to encourage harmonization of national migration strategies with the continental framework. The low level of policy and legislative traction achieved by the MPFA in AU member states can partly be attributed to the limited opportunities afforded to SCOs in the conceptualization and operationalization of the framework.

As the revised MPFA itself acknowledges in one of its key recommendations; migration is a multi-faceted phenomenon which demands the action of different stakeholders, hence the need for governments to facilitate and encourage the involvement of different stakeholders such as non-governmental organizations, community organizations,

migrants (including youths, women, diasporas) in the formulation of policies and implementation of programmes on migration.

The E-Workshop Series webinar series seek to create a platform for ECOSOCC to deploy the full range of its resources as the African Union organ responsible for civil society engagement in helping bridge the MPFA’s implementation gap in AU member states. Expected outcomes

  • Increased understanding and knowledge of the revised Migration Policy Framework for Africa within civil society organisations;
  • Improved engagement between African civil society and policymakers relative to the implementation of the revised MPFA;.
  • A greater understanding of the role of African civil society stakeholders in migration governance in Africa;
  • Strengthened advocacy framework for ECOSOCC to pursue the domestication and implementation of the revised MPFA at the level of AU member states.

Journalists are invited to cover and participate in the webinar on June 3rd, 2021 at 11:00 UTC
