African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) joins the rest of the continent in commemorating Day of the African Child.
16th June is an important date in the history of Africa as it marks the day students who marched against the apartheid education were brutally killed in Soweto, South Africa in 1976. The Assembly of Heads of State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1991, in memory of the Soweto killings, instituted 16th June as the day to commemorate the Day of the African Child.
The day celebrates children of Africa, reflects and deliberates on the situation of children’s rights in Africa, the progress made, and the challenges being faced.
This year’s theme for the day, “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children: Progress on Policy and Practice since 2013,” provides an opportunity to evaluate adoption of policies and practices and review actions done to effectively eradicate harmful practices affecting children in Africa. It further provides an opportunity to assess the status of harmful practices affecting children in Africa.
